Denmark's far-right and populist party, The New Right, has officially announced its dissolution. Party founder Pernille Vermund cited the need to consolidate the center-right forces in Denmark,

emphasizing the importance of fewer parties within the political spectrum.

Vermund, known for advocating a libertarian economic agenda and stringent controls on migrants, aimed at rebuilding the center-right in Denmark. The party had also called for Denmark's withdrawal from the EU, commonly referred to as "Dexit."

In the 2022 parliamentary elections, The New Right secured 3.7 percent of the vote, earning 6 seats. However, shortly after the election, internal rifts led to the departure of three MPs, while another was faced with health challenges, reducing the party's parliamentary presence to two members.

Morten Messerschmidt, chairman of Denmark's more established right-wing Danish People's Party, expressed surprise at the dissolution, acknowledging that The New Right had been a formidable rival. Nevertheless, Messerschmidt sees an increased role for his party in Danish politics.

The announcement has sparked speculation about Vermund's future political affiliations, as it remains unclear whether she will join another party. Photo by News Øresund – Sofie Paisley © News Øresund - Sofie Paisley, Wikimedia commons.
