French President Emmanuel Macron has extended an open invitation to scientists around the world to pursue their research in France or elsewhere in Europe. The appeal comes as the United
States, under President Donald Trump, implements significant funding cuts to universities and research institutions.
While Macron did not directly name the U.S., his message follows sweeping layoffs and budget reductions affecting American academics—particularly in top-tier universities now at odds with the Trump administration.
"Here in France, research is a priority, innovation is part of our culture, and science knows no limits. Researchers from around the world, choose France, choose Europe!" Macron declared in a post on X.
Hoping to attract global talent, France will launch a new "Choose France for Science" platform on May 5 to streamline applications for hosting international researchers.
