The 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has recognized eight Polish universities among the top 1,000 institutions globally.
The University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków are both placed in the 401-500 band.
In addition, the Gdańsk University of Technology is ranked in the 801-900 band, while the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the Warsaw University of Technology, and the Wrocław Medical University are all positioned within the 901-1,000 band.
The ARWU, also known as the Shanghai List, has been published since 2003 and is compiled by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, an international organization specializing in higher education research.
This year's ranking saw little change at the top, with Harvard University maintaining its position as the best university in the world, followed by Stanford University in second place and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in third. The University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford from the UK secured fourth and seventh places, respectively. The top 10 includes eight American and two British universities.
The number of Polish universities in the top 1,000 has decreased slightly, with nine making the list last year, down from 11 in 2022.
The ARWU ranking is based on several indicators, including the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners among graduates and staff, the number of publications in prestigious journals like Nature and Science, the number of highly cited researchers, and other achievements relative to the size of the institution, according to the Polish state news agency PAP.
