Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has voiced strong criticism of the European Union's migration deal, arguing that Poland should receive compensation for hosting more refugees than
other member states.
Speaking at a press conference in Gdańsk in early February 2025, during Poland's presidency of the EU Council, Sikorski emphasized the country's role in securing the EU’s eastern borders. He expressed frustration over Germany’s lack of financial support for border protection efforts, despite Poland’s significant investment of half a billion euros in strengthening border security. Sikorski reiterated Poland’s commitment to working with Germany and enhancing Frontex, the EU’s border protection agency.
In addition to migration, Sikorski addressed energy security, criticizing the Nord Stream pipeline as “a stain on Angela Merkel’s legacy.” He described the project as geopolitical in nature, at least from Russia’s perspective.
On the EU’s migration policy, Sikorski stated that Poland has already implemented key provisions of the migration pact and called for greater EU support for nations that bear the brunt of refugee intake.
Discussing the war in Ukraine, he asserted that the fastest resolution to the conflict would be for Russia to withdraw to its internationally recognized borders. He suggested that this could be accomplished "in five minutes with a single phone call from Putin to Gerasimov," referring to Russia’s Chief of General Staff.
