On January 26, 2024, Charles Michel announced his decision to withdraw from the European election and complete his term as President of the European Council. Speaking to Belga on Friday,
Michel expressed his concern about controversies overshadowing essential matters and potentially harming the European institution.
Acknowledging that he had underestimated the "extent and radicality of certain negative reactions," Michel cited hurtful attacks taking precedence over factual arguments, impacting the democratic evolution. He emphasized the need to consider the meaning and impact of an electoral commitment that has been a part of his life for 30 years, both personally and for his loved ones.
Michel's withdrawal comes 20 days after he declared his candidacy as the lead candidate for the francophone liberal party MR in the European elections scheduled for June 9. Critics accused him of prioritizing personal interests over the common good, and concerns were raised about the potential impact on Council meetings if a successor is not agreed upon before his resignation.
In response to the criticism, Michel stated that he viewed his candidacy as a responsibility to strengthen the democratic legitimacy of the European project through the European Parliament. Despite anticipating some controversy, he admitted underestimating the negative reactions from outside the European Council.
Michel remains committed to fulfilling his responsibilities with determination until the end of his mandate in November. Following this term, he plans to reflect on the nature and direction of his future commitments. The replacement for Michel on the MR list is yet to be announced.
