Donald Tusk, who is poised to lead Poland's next government, held a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels. Tusk emphasized that Poland must take
tangible steps to restore the rule of law before its frozen EU funds can be released.
This statement came following his recent selection as the opposition's candidate for prime minister. Tusk had previously pledged to unblock Poland's frozen EU funds, withheld by the European Commission due to rule-of-law concerns, immediately after the elections.
Von der Leyen praised the record turnout in Poland's elections and indicated that Poland would receive help in strengthening the protection of its eastern border. Tusk also mentioned the importance of demonstrating Poland's readiness to restore the rule of law through both legislation and practice. He acknowledged the need for the president's cooperation to achieve these reforms.
While there is concern that concessions may be made in other areas, Tusk stated that there would be no forced relocation of refugees under his government, and he expressed skepticism about changing EU treaties.
