Croatia has proudly claimed the top spot among European Union countries for the highest percentage of coastal bathing sites with excellent water quality, according

to a recent report.

A remarkable 99.1% of Croatia's coastal bathing sites were rated as having "excellent" water quality, securing its position as the EU leader in this category.

Trailing behind Croatia were Cyprus, with 97.6% of its bathing sites meeting the highest standards, and Greece, where 95.8% of coastal waters received an excellent rating.

These rankings underscore the Mediterranean region’s reputation for superior water quality, with Croatia leading the way. The results were shared by Eurostat on social media, highlighting the country’s success.

Why Water Quality Is Crucial

High-quality coastal waters are more than just visually appealing; they are essential for public health and environmental sustainability.

Contaminants such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci pose significant health risks to swimmers if they find their way into the water. These pollutants often come from untreated wastewater or agricultural runoff, particularly after heavy rainfall, making robust wastewater management crucial for safe bathing conditions.

Croatia’s strong wastewater treatment infrastructure has been instrumental in reducing pollution levels, ensuring that its picturesque beaches remain safe for both locals and tourists.

Ensuring Safe Waters for Swimmers

Throughout the swimming season, Croatia, along with other EU Member States, conducts regular monitoring of its coastal water quality. The collected data is analyzed and shared with the public, offering a transparent overview of current conditions and a forecast for the upcoming season.

Croatia's top ranking not only reflects the exceptional cleanliness of its waters but also reassures visitors that they can expect safe, enjoyable swimming experiences in the future.

With its crystal-clear waters and high safety standards, the Adriatic Sea is more inviting than ever, further solidifying Croatia's reputation as a premier destination for beachgoers.
