Diplomats from Germany and Belarus have been in discussions regarding a German national sentenced to death in Belarus. According to reports from the Belarusian foreign ministry, Minsk has

proposed some "solutions" to the situation.

The Belarusian human rights organization Viasna, citing unnamed sources, reported that Rico Krieger, a German national, was sentenced to death in Belarus on charges related to terrorism and mercenary activities.

Germany's foreign ministry confirmed on Friday that a German national had received a death sentence in Belarus and stated that Berlin was in intensive contact with Minsk regarding his fate, though they did not name the individual.

"Considering the request from the German foreign ministry, Belarus proposed concrete solutions for the available options," said Belarusian foreign ministry spokesperson Anatoly Glaz, as quoted by the Belta news agency.

Glaz also mentioned that Belarus, an ally of Russia, had granted consular access to the detained individual.

Viasna, in a statement on its website, noted that Krieger had been in custody since November 2023 and was convicted on June 24.

The German foreign ministry declined to comment further. However, a person familiar with the matter confirmed that the ministry, along with the embassy in Minsk, is providing consular support to the individual involved. Photo by Homoatrox, Wikimedia commons.
