A tunnel fire in the mountainous Austrian region of Tyrol resulted in the evacuation of an international night train traveling from Innsbruck to Amsterdam and Hamburg. Austrian emergency
services successfully rescued approximately 150 passengers from the train following the incident.
The fire broke out on Wednesday evening in the Terfner tunnel, a 16-kilometer tunnel, leading to a significant emergency situation. As a result of inhaling smoke, 33 individuals were taken to the hospital, as reported by the Tyrol authorities.
The Nightjet service, which was scheduled to divide during the journey, had some carriages bound for Amsterdam and others for Hamburg.
The rescued passengers were accommodated in hotels in Innsbruck for the night.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire originated when damaged overhead cables fell onto a carriage carrying cars. Although the fire was extinguished after approximately an hour, the tunnel remains closed for the time being. Photo by Dining Car from Wien, Austria, Wikimedia commons.
