The Verkhovna Rada has supported the introduction of three exams as a condition for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship. As reported by MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak, the decision was supported by
281 deputies.
According to bill #76, the exams will cover the basics of the Ukrainian Constitution, Ukrainian history, and proficiency in the state language.
"In general, parliament has supported the introduction of exams on the basics of the Ukrainian Constitution, Ukrainian history, and proficiency in the state language as a condition for obtaining citizenship," he said.
On May 23, 2022, a petition was registered in Ukraine calling for a mandatory citizenship exam. It received the necessary 25,000 votes for consideration. On July 8 of the same year, President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to the petition and handed it over to the Cabinet of Ministers, instructing them to consider the possibility of introducing changes.
On July 12, the government announced that it would prepare draft laws on the introduction of a comprehensive citizenship exam for Ukraine. And on July 28, it submitted the draft law to the Verkhovna Rada. At the time, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that after the adoption of this law, a comprehensive exam on the basics of the Ukrainian Constitution, Ukrainian history, and Ukrainian language proficiency would be required to obtain Ukrainian citizenship.
