In a heartwarming turn of events, a crowdfunding campaign for Hadjer Al-Ali, a homeless man in Amsterdam who found and returned a wallet containing nearly
2,000 euros, has amassed over 30,000 euros in less than a day.
Al-Ali, 33, was searching for empty cans and bottles to exchange for deposit money at Amsterdam Central Station when he discovered the wallet on a train bench. "It was a bit open. I saw a lot of money in it," he told De Stentor. Without hesitation, he took the wallet to the police station on Nieuwezids Voorburgwal, handing it over to a grateful police officer. "I don’t know whose money this is. Maybe someone saved it for their child. Maybe it belongs to someone who really needs it," Al-Ali said.
In recognition of his honesty, the Amsterdam police awarded Al-Ali the "Silver Thumb," an honor given to locals who perform exceptional acts. He also received a 50-euro gift voucher.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched for Al-Ali at 2:00 p.m. on Monday. By noon the following day, donations had surged to 30,926 euros.
Al-Ali has been homeless for a year and a half and has two young children, aged 6 and 5, who live in Apeldoorn. He believes more support should be provided for homeless fathers. "There should be a fund for homeless fathers so that they can do something with their children," he said.
