Starting in December 2026, Swiss pensioners will receive an extra monthly pension payment, as approved by parliament. However, the financing details remain undecided.

On Monday, the House of Representatives became the second chamber to approve the legal framework for this measure, with an overwhelming 193 votes in favor, none against, and no abstentions. The additional payment will be distributed at the end of each year to all eligible old-age pension recipients. However, heirs will not be entitled to this supplement.

Financial Impact and Implementation

The estimated cost of the extra pension payment is around CHF 4.2 billion ($4.7 billion) in 2026. Importantly, it will not lead to reductions in supplementary benefits for those who receive them.

Uncertain Funding Sources

Despite parliamentary approval, how the 13th pension will be financed remains uncertain. The Senate's responsible committee is currently reviewing potential funding solutions.
