Belgian start-up CBX Medical is embarking on a comprehensive research initiative to explore the medical potential of cannabis. The company, which currently distributes cannabis products

through pharmacies, aims to enhance the effectiveness of cannabinoids, including lesser-known compounds such as CBC and CBL, in addition to the well-established CBD.

Despite being a relatively new player in the market, CBX Medical successfully marketed cannabis products worth a quarter of a million euros through pharmacies last year. These products, based on cannabinoids, have been used to alleviate symptoms in individuals suffering from conditions such as muscle pain, epilepsy, and anxiety.

Founder Jonathan Blondiau expressed the need to overcome the reluctance of doctors to discuss cannabis with patients due to concerns about potential reactions. He believes that the existing taboos surrounding the cannabis plant are unfounded and hinder the broader utilization of its medical benefits. Blondiau emphasized the presence of positive stories associated with cannabis, while acknowledging that further scientific research is necessary to fully understand its potential.

To bolster their research efforts, CBX Medical secured an additional funding of 573,000 euros from the Walloon government. Combined with their existing resources, this investment brings their total commitment to 800,000 euros. The funds will be directed to scientific research at the University of Brussels (ULB) over the next four years. The aim is to develop new cannabinoid-based medications within a decade.

CBX Medical noted a growing interest among the medical community regarding the use of medicinal cannabis. The company has already conducted training sessions on cannabinoids, attended by over 1,500 Belgian pharmacists and doctors, further indicating the rising curiosity and openness to exploring the potential benefits of cannabis for medical purposes.

With their research initiative and commitment to expanding knowledge in the field, CBX Medical aims to contribute to the evolving landscape of medical cannabis and facilitate its acceptance as a viable treatment option. Photo by User:Jennifer Martin, Wikimedia commons.
