The date for the upcoming European elections has been officially set for 9 June 2024. This decision also simultaneously determines the date for the Belgian federal and
regional elections.
Portugal initially expressed reservations about the chosen date, as 9 June falls during a long weekend for them. However, unanimous agreement from all member states to change the standard date proved unattainable, as reported by L'Echo.
The preservation of 9 June is viewed as positive news in Belgium, especially since the country will assume the rotating EU presidency in the first half of 2024. As with previous presidencies nearing the end of the cycle, the Belgian presidency will face the challenge of racing against time to secure political agreements before the conclusion of the European Parliament's activities.
Now that the date for the European elections has been confirmed, Belgians also have clarity on the dates for the federal and regional elections. These elections will be held on the same day as the European elections, following the usual practice. Additionally, Belgium is set to hold municipal elections on 13 October next year.
