Brussels, May 15, 2025 – Brussels-Charleroi Airport experienced significant disruptions today following a security alert on a Ryanair flight, echoing a similar incident on May 13. Although details

remain scarce, airport officials confirmed that a potential threat led to the temporary closure of a runway and the diversion of several flights to Lille. The incident, reported by The Independent, caused delays across European routes, with Brussels Airlines bearing the brunt of cancellations.

A Ryanair spokesperson stated, “We apologize for the inconvenience, but safety is our priority.” The aircraft in question was moved to a secure area, and passengers were evacuated without incident. The US Embassy in Brussels issued a statement on X, advising travelers to monitor local news. Unlike the May 13 bomb threat, which led to a 500-meter security perimeter, today’s response was less extensive but still disrupted operations.

The incident highlights ongoing security challenges at Brussels’ airports, which have faced bomb threats and strikes in recent weeks. On April 29, a nationwide strike canceled 30% of flights, and today’s event has renewed calls for improved security protocols. “We need better screening and faster response times,” said aviation analyst Sophie Laurent. “These disruptions hurt Brussels’ reputation as a travel hub.”

Passengers expressed frustration on social media, with some questioning the frequency of such alerts. “Another day, another delay at Charleroi,” posted an X user. Airport authorities are working to restore normal operations by evening, but travelers are advised to check flight statuses.
