A wild fox managed to slip into the Wildlands Adventure Zoo in Emmen last month and killed two penguins, zoo officials confirmed. The incident occurred overnight and was later verified
through security camera footage and forensic evidence.
The fox entered the zoo through a small gap in the perimeter fence, which has since been sealed off, according to RTV Drenthe.
The next morning, zookeepers discovered the lifeless penguins in their enclosure, both bearing bite marks consistent with a predator attack. From the start, zoo staff suspected an intruder from outside the facility.
“Our suspicions were confirmed by both surveillance footage and trace evidence,” said a zoo spokesperson. “The footage clearly shows a fox entering the park and heading toward the penguin enclosure.”
Wybo Walstra, coordinator of Plant and Animal at Wildlands, explained that the fox used a small hole in the outer fencing to gain access. “It was a minor opening, but enough for the fox to get through,” he told RTV Drenthe.
After identifying the breach, the zoo quickly repaired the fencing. However, the fox was seen returning shortly after the incident. “He came back to investigate, but thankfully couldn’t get in again,” Walstra said. Photo by Emmenaar, Wikimedia commons.
