L'Echo reported on Thursday that there will be a surge in flights connecting China and Belgium in the coming years, thanks to a recent agreement between the Belgian Directorate General

of Aviation (DGLV) and its Chinese counterpart.

The previous accord was somewhat lopsided, with Belgian airlines granted only 28 flights per week to China, to be shared between passenger and cargo flights. Conversely, Chinese airlines enjoyed more than double the number of flights, with 60 weekly connections to Belgium.

The office of Belgian Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet has confirmed the conclusion of a new agreement, describing it as "the outcome of autonomous negotiations conducted by the DGLV in compliance with current legal norms." According to L'Echo, these new arrangements immediately boost the weekly flights to 50 for Belgium-based airlines and 70 for those based in China.

Starting from the summer season of 2025, these numbers are expected to rise to 60 and 77, respectively. By the summer of 2027, both countries will enjoy an increase in their flight quotas, with each being allocated 84 flights per week. Photo by Koenn07, Wikimedia commons.
