Between November 1, 2022 and February 28, 2023, the police recorded 12 burglaries in Haaltert and Denderleeuw. This is significantly less than during the winter months of previous years.
For example, between November 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019, there were 38 burglaries in the two municipalities.
Both municipalities find the decrease in the number of burglaries remarkable, especially because street lighting was turned off at night to save energy. There were fears that this would increase crime at night. However, the figures contradict this, the municipalities cautiously conclude.
It is possible that there are fewer burglaries in Haaltert and Denderleeuw because more mobile cameras are being used on the streets in both municipalities. Haaltert will also purchase more fixed cameras in the coming months. There are also increasingly more neighborhood information networks in both municipalities, which keep an eye on many neighborhoods.
