The confusion between Sweden and Switzerland has become a common occurrence, with approximately 120,000 people annually searching on Google to discern the difference between these

two European nations. To address this issue, Sweden's tourist board, Visit Sweden, has launched a lighthearted campaign aptly titled 'Welcome to Sweden (not Switzerland).' This initiative aims to clarify the disparities between the two countries, and in doing so, end the frequent mix-up.

The mix-up has been so pervasive that even global leaders have fallen prey to it. During a NATO summit speech last year, US President Joe Biden mistakenly referenced Switzerland while discussing Sweden's bid to join the military alliance.

Visit Sweden's satirical video featured an official representative standing between two Swedish flags, addressing the "leaders and citizens of Switzerland." She humorously emphasized the need to differentiate the two nations and humorously proposed a division of topics to avoid any further mix-up. Switzerland could continue discussing mountain peaks, yodeling, and watchmaking, while Sweden claimed a communication monopoly over rooftop bars, serenity, and escaping the constraints of time. The campaign underscores that as long as both countries adhere to these topic divisions in their external communication, the confusion should dissipate.

To further elucidate the differences between Sweden and Switzerland, Visit Sweden has outlined key distinctions on its website. For example, Switzerland boasts one of the world's largest gold reserves, while Sweden treasures 'forest gold.' In Sweden, Chantarelles, a mushroom with a gilded sheen, are foraged each autumn. For those seeking historic banks, Switzerland is the destination of choice, whereas Sweden offers 48,000 kilometers of coastline and wild archipelagos extending into the Baltic Sea, ideal for beach strolls and exploration.

Additionally, Sweden's natural spectacle is the Northern Lights, and the country requires no electricity for a spectacular display, as opposed to Switzerland, where one can enjoy light shows created with projections and LEDs. Lastly, while Switzerland is known for its interesting sounds, such as yodeling and cowbells, Sweden provides an ambiance of tranquility and quiet, enabling visitors to unwind and connect with nature.

By addressing these distinctions in a humorous manner, the Swedish tourist board hopes to alleviate the confusion and promote a clearer understanding of the unique qualities and offerings of Sweden, distinct from Switzerland.
