A substantial police operation at Brussels-South railway station led to the apprehension of approximately 60 individuals on Saturday. The operation, which was prompted by ongoing safety

concerns and disturbances reported by local residents and commuters, involved the deployment of over 100 police officers in the station vicinity. Commencing at 10:00 AM on Saturday, the operation is set to continue throughout the day.

The majority of those detained were arrested due to their undocumented status within Belgium. The Immigration Service was also present at the scene and will undertake further action regarding the cases.

This law enforcement initiative forms part of a series of new measures unveiled on Friday to enhance the safety and quality of life at the station. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden jointly announced these measures.

Minister Verlinden remarked, "In response to the urgent appeals from the National Railway Company of Belgium (SNCB) and the Brussels-Capital Region, citing their inability to manage the situation, we have taken immediate and visible steps." She added, "For a sustainable resolution, addressing fundamental issues such as poverty, housing, substance abuse, and infrastructural improvements is imperative. These components are integral to finding a comprehensive solution." Photo by Japplemedia, Wikimedia commons.
