On October 30, 2023, Ahold Delhaize, the parent company of the Albert Heijn supermarket group, announced its acquisition of the Romanian supermarket chain, Profi Rom Food,
for €1.3 billion.
This strategic move effectively doubles Ahold Delhaize's footprint in Romania, a market where it was already active through the Mega Image brand, boasting around 969 stores, primarily situated in urban areas.
Ahold Delhaize justified its decision, citing Romania as an appealing market marked by consistent growth in public wealth and purchasing power, driven by robust economic fundamentals.
The acquisition encompasses 1,654 Profi stores, primarily located outside urban centers. Over the 12 months leading up to June, Profi achieved a turnover of €2.5 billion, known for its competitive pricing structure and extensive range of products.
