The chances of a white Christmas in Switzerland are slim, with snowfall in the lowlands virtually ruled out, according to the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss).

Speaking on Tuesday at the request of the Swiss News Agency Keystone-SDA, MeteoSwiss said significant precipitation is unlikely on the northern side of the Alps over the festive period. Snowfall below 1,000 metres is almost certainly not expected around Christmas.

Current forecasts point to largely sunny conditions in the mountains, while the lowlands are likely to experience fog or high fog, occasionally accompanied by light winds. Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 1°C and 6°C.

Despite the outlook, MeteoSwiss cautioned that weather conditions over Christmas cannot yet be predicted with complete certainty. Photo by Devil Dancer, Wikimedia commons.
