The number of cross-border commuters working in Switzerland has seen a notable increase, rising by 2.4% over the past year.
According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), approximately 403,000 individuals holding a G permit were employed in Switzerland by the end of September 2024. This reflects a continued upward trend in cross-border employment.
A significant portion of these commuters reside in neighboring countries. Over half (around 57%) come from France, while notable shares also live in Italy (23%) and Germany (approximately 16%).
The FSO highlighted a substantial rise over a five-year period: in the third quarter of 2019, there were 339,000 cross-border commuters, marking an increase of nearly 19% by the third quarter of 2024.
