Portugal stands as one of the world's prominent consumers of cod, despite the absence of this species in its national waters.
"This Christmas, cod remains a staple dish on Portuguese tables. However, this species isn't sourced from Portuguese territorial waters; instead, it's imported," as highlighted by Pordata in a social media post on platform X.
In 2022, Portugal reported a catch of 121,069 tons of freshwater and marine creatures, including fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. Nevertheless, this figure marks a declining trend compared to the significantly higher catch of 333,695 tons recorded back in 1969. Photo by Wilhelm Thomas Fiege, Wikimedia commons.
