Tesla recorded a sharp increase in new vehicle registrations in Portugal in October, extending its recovery in Southern Europe as the US electric vehicle manufacturer strengthens its position in the Iberian Peninsula.
New Tesla car registrations in Portugal climbed 186.1% year-on-year to 412 vehicles in October, according to figures released on Monday by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP).
The latest results add to a strong performance throughout 2026. Between January and October, Tesla registered 9,673 vehicles in Portugal, representing a 62.5% increase compared with the same period last year.
The figures suggest that demand for Tesla vehicles is gaining momentum in Portugal, where the company has benefited from growing consumer interest in electric mobility and the expanding availability of charging infrastructure.
Tesla strengthens its position in Portugal and Spain
Portugal has emerged as an important market for Tesla's European expansion, with the company also recording significant gains in neighbouring Spain.
In September, Tesla registrations increased by 128.3% in Portugal and 24.8% in Spain compared with the previous year, according to figures reported by Reuters. The results highlighted the company's improving performance across the Iberian Peninsula, where electric vehicle adoption continues to expand.
The Tesla Model 3 has been a particularly important driver of this growth.
In September, the Model 3 became the best-selling passenger car in both Portugal and Spain, outperforming conventional petrol, diesel and hybrid models.
The vehicle recorded 2,065 registrations in Portugal and 2,528 in Spain during the month, according to industry figures reported by Portuguese automotive publication EVMag.
The performance demonstrates Tesla's ability to compete beyond the premium electric vehicle segment, attracting buyers in markets where affordability and running costs are increasingly important considerations.
Competition intensifies in Europe's electric vehicle market
Tesla's expansion across Portugal and Spain comes amid intensifying competition from European and Chinese manufacturers.
Automakers are introducing new electric models at increasingly competitive prices, while established European brands are expanding their battery-powered vehicle offerings.
Tesla's sales recovery has been supported by improved comparisons with weaker results a year earlier, rising fuel prices, government incentives and growing interest in electric vehicles.
However, analysts have cautioned that maintaining the current pace of growth could become more difficult as competition intensifies.
Tesla continues to rely heavily on its Model 3 and Model Y, while rival manufacturers are bringing a wider range of new electric vehicles to European markets.
Despite these challenges, the company's latest registration figures suggest that Portugal and Spain are becoming increasingly important markets for its European business.

With Portugal recording a particularly strong October performance and Spain contributing to the broader recovery, the Iberian Peninsula is emerging as one of the more promising areas for Tesla's European sales growth.
Additional context: Reuters reported that Tesla's European recovery is also taking place against a backdrop of rising electric vehicle registrations across several major markets. The company will nevertheless face growing pressure from established European automakers and Chinese competitors as the market becomes more crowded.
