Electric vehicles (EVs) remain relatively uncommon in Switzerland, with only 4.1% of all registered cars running exclusively on electricity. A recent energy report by Energie Schweiz and
Geoimpact highlights significant regional variations in EV adoption across the country.
The canton of Zug leads the way, with electric vehicles making up 8.7% of its car population. It is followed by Zurich at 5.2% and Vaud at 4.3%. At the other end of the spectrum, the cantons of Uri (2.8%), Geneva (3.0%), and Neuchâtel (3.0%) have the lowest percentages of electric cars.
When it comes to new vehicle registrations, electric cars represent nearly 19% of the market this year, a slight decrease compared to last year. However, traditional petrol cars (30%) and hybrids (33%) continue to dominate Swiss roads, reflecting the ongoing challenges in the country's energy transition to greener transportation options.
