A Holocaust memorial in Lyon has been vandalized with the words “Free Gaza,” local authorities confirmed on Sunday, sparking condemnation amid heightened concerns over

antisemitism in France.

The phrase was etched onto a black marble stele, according to a photo posted online by Yonathan Arfi, president of CRIF, the umbrella group representing Jewish institutions in the country.

Arfi denounced the act as “despicable” in a statement Saturday night. Lyon’s mayor, Gregory Doucet, and the prefect of the Rhone region, Fabienne Buccio, also condemned the vandalism. Photo by Romainbehar, Wikimedia commons.
