On Thursday, Flemish media group Mediahuis announced its acquisition of Euractiv, a pan-European news brand that focuses on covering European Union policies.
Euractiv employs journalists throughout Europe and reports on EU policy in 13 languages. With the increasing competition for EU policy coverage, Mediahuis intends to become the leading European media group through this acquisition, while Euractiv will be able to utilize the media group's international resources.
Mediahuis currently publishes several newspapers in Belgium, including De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad, Gazet van Antwerpen, and Het Belang van Limburg, and employs around 4,600 people.
Last year, it had a turnover of over 1.2 billion euros and has now expanded its operations in the Benelux, Germany, and Ireland. Gert Ysebaert, CEO of Mediahuis, stated that "Euractiv has succeeded in building a promising news brand and has become a reliable source of information for EU policymakers, interest groups, and other media," and emphasized the need for strong, independent, and pluralistic European coverage of EU politics and policymaking.
