The Flemish regional government has made a significant decision to invest 1.5 million euros annually in the NATO Innovation Fund and DIANA, NATO's 'accelerator' for investment in defense

innovation. This move comes as part of NATO's efforts to maintain its technological advantage over potential adversaries like Russia and China. The DIANA fund, which was established two years ago by 17 member states, including Belgium, aims to ensure that NATO stays at the forefront of technological advancements in defense.

Flemish knowledge institutions, Imec, Flanders Make, and VIB, have also signed an agreement with NATO to participate in the DIANA initiative as test centers. The specific details of their involvement are still being discussed.

Economy Minister Jo Brouns emphasized that today's technological breakthroughs often stem from civilian technologies rather than solely military developments. This shift towards dual-use technologies is where both DIANA and the NATO Innovation Fund will focus their efforts.

Additionally, this investment marks the first time that Flanders has contributed to NATO's target of spending 2 percent of GDP on defense. This move underscores the region's commitment to supporting NATO's mission and advancing defense innovation. Photo by Julo, Wikimedia commons.
