Chinese automotive manufacturers have overtaken Japanese brands in European vehicle sales for the first time, marking a significant shift in the region’s increasingly competitive car market.

Market research company Dataforce reported on Monday that Chinese brands captured 12.7% of European car sales between July and September, surpassing Japanese manufacturers, whose combined share stood at 11.9%. The gap widened towards the end of the third quarter, highlighting the growing momentum behind China’s automotive industry.

Brands including BYD, Jaecoo, Xpeng and Zeekr are expanding their presence across European markets, challenging established manufacturers such as Toyota and Nissan. The rapid rise is particularly striking given that Chinese automakers accounted for only around 1% of the European market five years ago.

Despite their growing influence, Chinese manufacturers have yet to displace European companies from their leading position in their home market. Established groups such as Volkswagen and Renault continue to command a substantial share of sales, although the expansion of Chinese brands is intensifying competitive pressure on the industry.

The European Union has taken steps to protect its automotive sector, arguing that state support for Chinese manufacturers creates an uneven competitive environment. Brussels has already imposed additional import duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles and, earlier this month, reached an agreement on import quotas for hybrid models.

At the same time, European carmakers face mounting difficulties in China, a crucial market for manufacturers such as Volkswagen and BMW. Chinese consumers are increasingly favouring domestic brands, which have gained ground by offering competitively priced vehicles, introducing new models at a faster pace and responding more quickly to demand for advanced automotive technology.

The contrasting trends underline the challenges facing the global automotive industry. While Chinese manufacturers are strengthening their position in Europe, traditional European and Japanese brands must adapt to changing consumer preferences, intensifying price competition and the rapid transformation of the sector.
