Belgium's two highest-ranked universities, KU Leuven and Ghent University (UGent), have both risen in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. KU Leuven moved

up two spots to 43rd place, while UGent climbed three places to a shared 112th position.

Belgium has four universities in the top 200, with the University of Antwerp sharing 168th place, and the Université Catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve ranked 175th.

US and UK Dominate the Rankings The University of Oxford continues to hold the top spot for the ninth consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. Seven of the top 10 universities are from the US, with the remaining three from the UK.

European universities, particularly in Western Europe, have been slipping in the rankings, with only 91 institutions remaining in the top 200, down from 99 in 2019.

The 2024 THE rankings evaluate 2,092 universities from 115 countries, 185 more than last year. The rankings are based on 18 indicators, focusing primarily on education, research, internationalization, and knowledge transfer to industry, with education and research contributing most heavily to the scores.
