Portugal has once again claimed the title of the largest bicycle producer in the European Union for 2022, according to data released by Eurostat on Thursday.
In 2022, Portugal produced 2.7 million bicycles out of a total of 14.7 million manufactured within the European community. This accounts for approximately 18% of the entire bicycle production in Europe. Other notable bicycle producers in Europe include Romania, with 2.6 million units, Italy with 2.5 million, Germany with 1.7 million, and Poland with 1.0 million, as reported by the EU statistics office.
The year 2022 saw a 10% increase in bicycle production in the European community compared to the previous year. This production of 14.7 million units also represents a significant 29% increase over the past decade, from 2012 to 2022.
However, despite this overall positive trend in Europe, Portugal experienced a decline in production sold, the statistic used in this context. This is because the country reported a production of 2.9 million units in the previous year, which dropped to 2.7 million in the current year. Data from the previous year indicated that Portugal had approximately five dozen companies engaged in bicycle production, with exports reaching 800 million euros in 2022.
