On January 19, 2024, the Flemish Community successfully secured the acquisition of 'The Virgin of Consolation' by James Ensor for a sum of 3.75 million euros. Currently, the artwork is on
public display at the MAS in Antwerp until February 25, following which it will embark on a long-term loan to the Ghent Museum of Fine Arts.
Art experts highlight that this painting, dating back to 1892, stands as one of Ensor's final masterpieces from his most esteemed period. Offering a narcissistic interpretation of the biblical tale of the Annunciation, the artwork depicts Mary assuming the role of the angel Gabriel, with Ensor himself portrayed in the position of Mary.
The Flemish government's acquisition of this significant piece ensures its preservation and sustained accessibility to the public. Presently featured in a temporary exhibition of Flemish masterpieces at the MAS in Antwerp, the painting will find a permanent home at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, where it was previously housed.
The purchase, amounting to 3.75 million euros, was made from an avid Ensor collector. This acquisition serves as a prelude to 2024, designated as the year of Ensor, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the painter's passing. Throughout the year, a series of exhibitions and activities are planned in Antwerp, Oostende, and Brussels to honor the legacy of James Ensor. Photo by Wikimedia commons.
