Germany's foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, stated on Friday that Germany opposes the sending of cluster munitions to Ukraine, following reports that the United States was planning to

provide such weapons to Kyiv.

Cluster munitions are widely condemned for their impact on civilian populations, and human rights organizations have raised concerns about their use. Baerbock emphasized that Germany, as a party to the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), adheres to the Oslo agreement, which prohibits the use, stockpiling, production, and transfer of cluster munitions.

The United States, however, is not a party to the convention. The White House confirmed that the possibility of sending cluster munitions to Ukraine is being considered but did not make any official announcement. The issue is expected to be a topic of discussion at the upcoming NATO summit, which President Joe Biden will attend in Lithuania. Photo by Manfred Brückels, Wikimedia commons.
