On the 26th of August 2023, a momentous joint 50th birthday celebration for Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway unfolded at the Royal Palace in Oslo.

The affair, named 'Bakgårdsfest' (Backyard Party), brought together well-wishers from across Norway to commemorate this special occasion.

Queen Sonja commenced the festivities with a warm speech, revealing that for their milestone birthdays, the royal couple had chosen to traverse Norway, immersing themselves in the landscapes, communities, and people they hold dear. The unique ambiance of the party resonated with the couple's personalities, with Queen Sonja highlighting the presence of Haakon's surfboards, bicycles, and an electric car that added charm to the décor.

Close to 400 guests, including community and organizational leaders, were invited from all corners of Norway. Among them were individuals whom the Crown Prince and Princess had encountered during their nationwide excursions, as well as through their charitable engagements and patronage.

An unprecedented touch was added to the celebration, as the Royal Court revealed that 48 tables were set up in the Slottsgården, marking the first-ever backyard party at the palace. The menu exclusively featured Norwegian cuisine, accompanied by a birthday cake at each table.

Queen Sonja turned her attention to her son and daughter-in-law, lauding their unwavering commitment to their duties and their steadfast support of the Royal Family. She remarked, "In our family, we live and work closely together... We all have our uniqueness, which I feel we respect each other for."

She continued, praising the couple's ability to navigate their distinct paths while fostering a nurturing home environment for their children. She acknowledged their contributions to important causes like mental health, youth development, entrepreneurship, international initiatives, and youth literacy.

In their own speeches, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit emphasized the significance of celebrating Norway and its people. Haakon expressed gratitude for the memories shared with the guests from their travels across the country. He emphasized the value of connecting with people in small places to truly grasp the essence of Norway's beauty.

Reflecting on their regional visits leading up to their birthdays, the couple shared tales of the people they met and the places they experienced. Crown Princess Mette-Marit spoke of the individuals who make Norway vibrant and livable, regardless of the size of their contributions.

The evening culminated with a concert by Norwegian singer Dagny, gifted by the government. Before this enchanting conclusion, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre moved the Crown Princess with his touching words, acknowledging the couple's resilience and mutual support, both in their personal life and their role in the country.
