On April 1, 2024, the cost of a pack of cigarettes surged to €11, marking an increase of nearly one euro. This hike is part of the government's ongoing efforts to deter smoking.

The price of rolling tobacco also saw a significant rise, climbing by €3.60 to approximately €24 per packet. Moreover, additional increases are anticipated. According to figures from the finance ministry, the tax levied on cigarettes now stands at approximately €7.81 per pack.

Research conducted three years ago by Maastricht University revealed that smokers tend to take notice of the cost of smoking only when prices experience a substantial spike. Around 50% of respondents indicated they would contemplate quitting only when the price per pack reached €60.

Furthermore, researchers highlight that while cigarette prices have steadily increased over the years, so have wages. Consequently, tobacco products have only seen a marginal rise in affordability.

Currently, about 20% of the Dutch population smoke regularly. However, the government established a goal in 2018 to reduce this figure to just 5% by 2040.
