In the Danish capital of Copenhagen, a new initiative has been devised to encourage both visitors and locals to be more eco-friendly.

The pilot program, CopenPay, launched today, July 15. So, if you're currently in the city, give it a try and don't forget to tell us all about it afterward. You can prepare by quickly reading some books from Lux's selection on conscious consumption.

The CopenPay program involves converting eco-friendly actions into currency for cultural experiences. For example, visitors who bring plastic waste to the National Gallery of Denmark will gain access to a workshop where they can transform the waste into a piece of art. Tourists who arrive by bicycle or public transport to the city's famous power plant will be allowed to descend from the artificial ski slope on the building's roof. All they need to do is show their public transport ticket, although the program primarily relies on the honor system.

The developers of the eco-program are confident that this approach will allow tourists to immerse themselves more deeply in the life of the city while reducing the environmental impact. More than 20 locations are participating in the project, and the CopenPay program will run from July 15 to August 11. Photo by Kristoffer Trolle from Copenhagen, Denmark, Wikimedia commons.
