Following the recent implementation of a drone network, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges (PoAB) has now deployed an extensive radar and camera network to further bolster its security measures.

The port authority aims to enhance supervision and ensure the safe and efficient flow of shipping traffic.

Equipped with advanced technology, the radar and camera network cover the entire port area, providing crucial data for the management of shipping operations. "This system ranks among the most advanced and high-performance port systems worldwide, representing a significant step towards establishing a digital nervous system," stated a port authority representative.

Spanning over 120 square kilometers and accommodating more than 300,000 shipping movements annually, the Port of Antwerp necessitates the integration of digital cameras and radar infrastructure for comprehensive security. Currently, the port operates 460 cameras and 22 radar systems that are seamlessly connected to a central coordination center.

The integration of this network brings notable advantages in terms of safety and operational efficiency. Data collected from the cameras and radar are utilized at the Center for Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and the Harbourmaster's Office to monitor waterways and berths. "Previously, certain blind spots within the port area hindered our ability to monitor unforeseen shipping movements or incidents," explained COO Rob Smeets. "Thus, this network proves to be a valuable asset in terms of safety and operational efficiency."

Additionally, all captured images will be incorporated into the port's existing "digital twin" known as APICA (Advanced Port Information and Control Assistant). APICA serves as a digital replica of the entire port area, utilizing a network of sensors and drones to provide real-time updates on port activities.

The recorded images can be shared with security services and relevant authorities. Moreover, the cameras are equipped with specially developed artificial intelligence technology, enabling them to recognize ships and track their movements accurately. This enhances situational awareness and facilitates prompt response in case of any security concerns.

The installation of the radar and camera network represents a significant investment by the Port of Antwerp to ensure the safety, security, and efficiency of its operations.
