Mia and Noah were once again the most popular names for newborns in Switzerland in 2023, according to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). Following Mia in the

rankings were Emma and Sofia, while Liam and Matteo trailed Noah.

This marks the seventh time Mia has claimed the top spot, having previously led the list in 2013, 2015, 2016, and from 2019 to 2021. Noah has also been a favorite for over a decade, holding the number one position in 2010, 2011, and from 2013 to 2017, as well as in 2021 and 2022.

Vera made the most significant jump among girls' names, climbing 114 places in popularity, while Kiyan saw the biggest increase for boys, soaring 186 spots. On the other hand, Thea experienced the largest drop among girls' names, falling 63 places, and Maxime was the biggest loser among boys, dropping 68 places.

Despite the changes in baby names, the overall permanent resident population in Switzerland saw no shift in the most common first names: Daniel and Maria remained the most prevalent.

As for surnames, Müller, Meier, and Schmid continue to dominate in Switzerland, with 53,170 Müllers making up 0.6% of the population, followed by 32,657 Meiers and 30,332 Schmids. In French-speaking regions, da Silva was the most common surname with 10,287 people, while in Ticino, Bernasconi topped the list with 2,250, and in Romansh-speaking areas, Caduff led with 230 people.
