A delegation of eight Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from the Committee on Development and the Subcommittee on Human Rights is beginning a three-day mission to the

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) today.

From Monday 27 to Wednesday 29 October, the delegation will assess how the European Union’s approach to sustainable development operates in fragile contexts and explore lessons learned from integrating development, humanitarian, and peacebuilding efforts.

During their visit to Lubumbashi, MEPs will meet key stakeholders and visit EU-funded projects to examine how the EU’s flagship Global Gateway initiative is being implemented on the ground. They will also evaluate initiatives aimed at improving governance and transparency in the management of the DRC’s natural resources — particularly given the country’s vital role in the global supply of critical raw materials. Discussions will also address human rights, social cohesion, and responsible mining practices.

Throughout the mission, the delegation will engage with local government representatives, civil society organisations, and other actors involved in sustainable development, biodiversity protection, mining governance, and human rights advocacy. Field visits will provide MEPs with a first-hand look at EU-supported projects focused on agriculture, technical and vocational training, community participation, women’s empowerment, and efforts to combat child labour.
