In a surprising announcement during her annual New Year's Eve address, Queen Margrethe revealed her intention to abdicate in January 2024 after a reign of 52 years, passing the throne
to her son, Crown Prince Frederik.
Expressing her decision, she stated, "I believe now is the appropriate time. On January 14, 2024—52 years after I succeeded my beloved father—I will step down as Queen of Denmark, entrusting the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik."
Reflecting on the past year for Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands, the Queen shared personal moments, notably her recovery from extensive back surgery earlier in the year. This medical event prompted contemplation about the future and the responsibility of succession to the next generation.
Crown Prince Frederik, who has been heir apparent since 1972 at the age of four, will ascend to the throne at 55, assuming the role of King Frederik X, in line with Danish tradition dictating monarchs as either Frederiks or Christians.
Having celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2022, marking 52 years of rule, Queen Margrethe expressed gratitude to her kingdom for the unwavering warmth and support received throughout her reign.
Acknowledging the governments she collaborated with, she extended her appreciation to the countless individuals who, through special occasions and everyday life, showered her and her family with affectionate sentiments, making her years a collection of cherished moments.
Concluding her address, Queen Margrethe conveyed her hopes for Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, wishing that the same trust and affection bestowed upon her would embrace the new royal couple.
Offering her final blessing to Denmark, she concluded her last New Year's Eve speech with the heartfelt sentiment, "God preserve Denmark. God bless you all." The full address is available for reading here. Photo by Varde Kommune, Wikimedia commons.
