Buoys, positioned in Faro, Sines, Nazaré, and Leixões, have reported waves exceeding 15 meters in height, according to the Hydrographic Institute. These buoy readings surpassed typical wave
heights during the passage of depressions Babet, Aline, and Bernard, which occurred from October 17th to 23rd.
A wave reaching 9.9 meters in height was documented in Faro on the 22nd of October. The most substantial wave was observed in the North of Portugal at the Leixões buoy, measuring 15.8 meters on the morning of October 20th. The second-highest wave, at 11.7 meters, was recorded in Nazaré on the same morning.
On another note, Faro experienced a red weather alert on a Sunday due to the risk of heavy and continuous rainfall, a consequence of Depression Bernard. Strong crosswinds disrupted flight operations at Gago Coutinho International Airport, leading to the cancellation of at least seven flights. Photo by muffinn from Worcester, UK, Wikimedia commons.
