In the first quarter of 2023, Portugal experienced more than 400 accidents related to bicycles and scooters. The Portuguese Association of Insurers (APS) has recognized the

need to address this concerning trend during European Mobility Week.

APS aims to raise awareness among young people about the risks and advantages of urban "micro mobility." This initiative comes in response to data from the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa, which reported a significant number of accidents involving these modes of transportation.

José Galamba de Oliveira, President of APS, emphasized the importance of acknowledging the risks associated with the coexistence of pedestrians, cars, bicycles, and scooters on city roads. He expressed satisfaction with the publication titled "Bicycles and Scooters: Yes or No?" It is part of the "Seguros e Cidadania" collection and aims to clarify the insurance regulations related to these modern means of transportation.

The book delves into various aspects, including accident risks, safety rules compliance, the need for dedicated bike lanes, the ecological benefits of bicycles, and the lack of proper regulations governing these modes of transport. APS is committed to promoting measures that enhance safety and reduce risks for users and pedestrians alike. Photo by muffinn from Worcester, UK, Wikimedia commons.
