Starting in 2024, the port of Brussels will be reintegrated into the wider European rail network following an agreement between the federal and Brussels governments, as reported by the

Brussels Times.

Brussels Environment Minister Alain Maron, representing the francophone green party Ecolo, stated, "The reinstatement of rail freight services to the port of Brussels has been a key objective of mine to mitigate air pollution resulting from road transport." He added, "With the expansion of the container terminal, the establishment of urban distribution centers, and now this rail connection, we will significantly enhance the supply chain for Brussels and simultaneously reduce the number of trucks on our roads, thus improving the quality of life in Brussels."

Federal Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet will allocate the necessary funds for the project through the multi-annual investment plan of the railway company Infrabel. Gilkinet emphasized that "the reestablishment of the rail link between the port of Brussels and the railway will create new logistical opportunities for companies looking to minimize their environmental impact and alleviate traffic congestion in Brussels."

Railway Revitalization Efforts This initiative is part of the federal government's efforts to "revitalize" the country's railways. Gilkinet stated, "Our objective is clear: we aim to double the volume of goods transported by rail by 2030. This new railway connection will significantly contribute to this goal while fostering the economic development of the port."

Upon completion, the upgraded infrastructure is projected to divert up to 18,500 fewer trucks from passing through Brussels. Gilkinet concluded, "This will benefit the economy, the climate, road safety, and the overall quality of life for Brussels residents." Photo by Wim Bladt, Wikimedia commons.
