French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his readiness to engage in a debate concerning the role of nuclear weapons in a unified European defense, according to an interview published

on Saturday.

Macron's remarks underscore a broader push for a European-led defense strategy, with a focus on anti-missile defense, long-range capabilities, and nuclear deterrence.

"I am prepared to initiate this discussion, encompassing nuclear weapons for nations possessing them or hosting American nuclear armaments," Macron stated in an interview with the regional press group EBRA. He emphasized the importance of assessing all defense options to ensure credible protection.

While reaffirming France's commitment to its unique nuclear capability, Macron indicated a willingness to enhance contributions to Europe's defense.

The interview took place during Macron's visit to Strasbourg on Friday.

Following Brexit, France stands as the sole EU member with independent nuclear capabilities.

In a separate address at Paris' Sorbonne University on Thursday, Macron highlighted the existential threat posed by Russian aggression and called for a defense strategy that reduces reliance on the United States. Photo by Jacques Paquier, Wikimedia commons.
